Pediatric Trauma Center Bypass
Purpose
•
To
provide a process for trauma patient flow when, in the extremes of
circumstances, should it occur, this facility and or Pediatric Surgical
Resources are unable to care for Pediatric Trauma patients. Kentucky Children’s
Hospital is one of only 2 Level I Pediatric Trauma Centers in the state of
Kentucky.
•
The
American College of Surgeons on Trauma criteria (CD3-5 Resources for Optimal
Care) for Level I Trauma Centers states “when diversion becomes necessary,
there must be a specific process and procedure in place to alert prehospital
personnel and surrounding trauma centers”.
The Trauma Medical Director must be involved in the decision process for
instituting trauma bypass.
UK
HealthCare Diversion
In
accordance with this institution’s policies, Pediatric Trauma or Pediatric
patients are NOT diverted
The
enterprise does have formalized diversion policies in place and can be accessed
here:
In the
event of extenuating catastrophic circumstances, for which pediatric trauma
would be deferred, the Trauma Medical Director (TMD) will be involved in the
decision-making process.
•
The
TMD will communicate with enterprise administration and the emergency
department prior to making said decision.
•
As
this would only happen in the extreme of circumstances, the state’s Kentucky
Hospital Association has mutual aid agreements/MOUs with all its members that
allow hospital facilitates to cover for one another in extreme,
hazardous/disaster like situations. This
allows for the flow of patients and on occasion staff to other trauma centers
within the state of Kentucky providing emergency approvals, acceptances, and
credentialing.
