Administrative Organization and Management of Pediatric Trauma Program

Administrative Organization and Management of Pediatric Trauma Program

  • Pediatric Surgery is a division of the Department of Surgery at the University of Kentucky College of Medicine.

  • Kentucky Children’s Hospital and the Division of Pediatric Surgery provide comprehensive pediatric trauma care for the most severely injured children locally, regionally, and across the Central and Eastern Kentucky referral area and beyond as needed.

  • Pediatric Surgery provides oversight and management of trauma care for pediatric trauma patients at Kentucky Children’s Hospital Level I Trauma Center.

  • The Pediatric Trauma Medical Director (TMD) is an Attending Pediatric Surgeon who leads the multidisciplinary activities of the trauma program in coordination with the Associate Trauma Medical Director (ATMD).  The TMDs maintain oversight and leadership of the pediatric trauma program in conjunction with the Pediatric Trauma Program Manager (or Pediatric Trauma Coordinator*), while working in conjunction with multidisciplinary services to assure the overall comprehensive care as required for a Level I Trauma Center by the American College of Surgeons.

  • The Pediatric TPM, named the Pediatric Trauma Coordinator*, assumes day to day responsibility for operational, quality improvement, and patient safety aspects as are related to nursing, ancillary departments, and physician functions as delineated by the TMDs.

  • Pediatric Trauma Service is the primary structure for providing care for injured patients and includes multidisciplinary services and resources to ensure efficient provision of care. The following chart depicts multidisciplinary services involved:

The Pediatric Trauma Coordinator reports through the Trauma Program Office to the UK HealthCare Chief Nurse Executive, as illustrated in the chart below:
